Notice:  It would appear that the WinoStuff WinoBabe Patrol has made a serious mistake.  Our WinoBabe of the Month for July 2006 was Amy Reiley.  However, our crack team of WinoBabe photographers erroneously posted a picture of someone else!  The picture that appeared was that of Amy's friend, Cheryl Campbell !!! Given that Cheryl was naked, sitting in front of a refrigerator with a glass of wine, we decided to transfer the title of WinoBabe of the Month to Cheryl.  What the hell.  She's hot, she's drinking wine, she hangs out with other hot, possibly-naked wine-drinking women.  That's good enough for us.

Anyway, we need to correct our error.  So, in the interest of accurate and responsible journalism, we present the real Amy Reiley.  Writer, drinker, Master of Gastronomy, and again...

This month we salute Joelle Marti-Baron as our Wino Babe of the Month.  Ms. Marti-Baron is the first female to win the UK Sommelier of the Year award.  This coveted prize has thus far only been awarded to pasty white, bulbous males with slick hair and bad teeth (see Hugh Johnson).  As one can see Ms. Marti-Baron shatters the mold.

Several reasons influencing our panel’s decision are the facts that Joelle loves big chunky wines and names Laughing Magpie, an Aussie red, as one of her personal favorites, and white Burgundies as her runner up.  She also thinks South African is the region to focus on in the near future.  The final factor that made me vote twice was that Joelle runs a Champagne Club at the Hotel Le Pont de la Tour for Black American Express Card holders only!  The personal endorsement from the only Black AmEx holder I know, Wino Odd Job, made this the special, personal reason we selected Ms. Marti-Baron.

Congratulations, Joelle!  You are the WinoBabe of the Month!

What better way to end the Year of the Pinot than by naming Merry Edwards this short month’s Wino Babe of the Month

Ms. Edwards is affectionately known as the "Queen of Pinot Noir" (putting to rest the rumor that BigBob was actually the Queen of Pinot Noir) and she reigns over the Pinot crops of the Russian River Valley. Queen Edwards first expressed her craft at  Mount Eden Vineyards.  Now, Her Highness has her own vineyard, Meredith Estates, while also presiding over the Russian River Valley Winegrowers Association.

Now that is one powerful chick and deserving of Wino Babe honors.  As the year of the Pinot fades into darkness, we want to go out with a fitting tribute.  You decide.   www.merryedwards.com

The only thing that could top a hot WinoBabe like Lindsey is a pair of Wino Babes, namely Lisa Vinton and Darcy Jones, co-hostesses of an internet radio show called Only2Degrees.  (I think they have a website, too, called Only2Degrees.com.)

These two winos had the distinct pleasure misfortune of interviewing WinoBob on their show.  So what do we do to show our appreciation?  The only thing we know how...  WinoBabes of the Month!!!

Named the Queen of Charbono by the LA Times, Sally Ottoson is the mastermind behind Pacific Star Winery in Mendocino County, CA.  While she may be the queen of charbono, Sally also makes a few other obscure varietals including Carignane and Barbera (along with the usual cast of characters including Chardonnay, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel).

Two Left Feet, Carnival of Love, Sip It Forward (profits benefit educational programs for children in Cambodia- so I drink, you know..., to help others...), Giggle Pot and the much ballyhooed  Velvet Glove.  Though the $175.00 price tag on the Velvet Glove is out of my reach, the packaging is seductive enough to make me sell my GI Joe collection to purchase it.

We had to remove this picture only weeks after it was posted.  It appears that this woman's boobs are shaped exactly like BigBob's head!  (I hadn't even noticed it but the hate mail was becoming unmanageable...).  Sorry to whomever she is...

As you know, we welcome suggestions for our most coveted award, WinoBabe of the Month. This month, we recognize a woman who must have tremendous standing in the wine industry.  We don't know her name but she was nominated by our good friend, BigBob Ferdon.  BigBob, himself, is some kind of industry big wig so a nominee from BB must have some real clout in the biz.

Personally, I find something very disturbing about this woman.  I can't quite put my finger on it...  But, if BigBob says she is worthy of WinoBabe of the Month honors, that's good enough for us!

This month, we look to France for our most esteemed honoree.  Congratulations are in order for Carole Salen, winemaker extra-ordinaire at Domaine les Bastides.

Domaine les Bastides was established in the early 1970s by a local farmer named Jean Salen.  He is now ably assisted by his oenologist daughter, Carole, who has studied both in Burgundy and Bordeaux.

The estate covers over 30 hectares and their leading wine is the Cuvée Valeria, a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, with some Mourvèdre. This wine spends one year in vat, followed by two in foudres, and shows plenty of Cabernet backbone on tasting. The Cuvée Tradition is Grenache, with a little Carignan and Cinsaut, aged in foudres for eighteen months. There is also a white, a mix of Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc and Rolle, and finally a rosé, made using Grenache and Cinsaut.

Congratulations, Carole!!!

An old Medocain proverb says "There is no great vineyard which does not overlook the river". Château Loudenne is the only château in the Médoc with its own private harbor. This estate's motto: Luxury, beauty and pleasure...  And who better personifies that motto than the affable Florence herself.
