WinoBabe of the Month!
Notice: It would appear that the WinoStuff WinoBabe Patrol has made a
serious mistake. Our WinoBabe of the Month for July 2006 was Amy Reiley.
However, our crack team of WinoBabe photographers erroneously posted a
picture of someone else! The picture that appeared was that of Amy's
friend, Cheryl Campbell !!! Given that Cheryl was naked, sitting in front
of a refrigerator with a glass of wine, we decided to transfer the title of
WinoBabe of the Month to Cheryl. What the hell. She's hot, she's
drinking wine, she hangs out with other hot, possibly-naked wine-drinking women.
That's good enough for us.
Anyway, we need to correct our error. So,

This month
we salute
Joelle Marti-Baron as our Wino Babe of the Month. Ms. Marti-Baron is
the first female to win the UK Sommelier of the Year award. This coveted
prize has thus far only been awarded to pasty white, bulbous males with slick
hair and bad teeth (see Hugh Johnson). As one can see Ms. Marti-Baron
shatters the mold.

Several reasons influencing
our panel’s decision are the facts that Joelle loves big chunky wines and
names Laughing Magpie, an Aussie red, as one of her personal favorites, and
white Burgundies as her runner up. She also thinks South African is
the region to focus on in the near future. The final factor that made
me vote twice was that Joelle runs a Champagne Club at the Hotel Le Pont de
la Tour for Black American Express Card holders only! The personal
endorsement from the only Black AmEx holder I know, Wino Odd Job, made this
the special, personal reason we selected Ms. Marti-Baron.

This month, we look to France for our most esteemed honoree.
Congratulations are in order for
Carole Salen,
winemaker extra-ordinaire at Domaine les Bastides.

Domaine les
Bastides was established in the early 1970s by a local farmer named Jean
Salen. He is now ably assisted by his oenologist daughter, Carole, who
has studied both in Burgundy and Bordeaux.
The estate
covers over 30 hectares and their leading wine is the Cuvée Valeria, a blend
of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache, with some Mourvèdre. This wine
spends one year in vat, followed by two in foudres, and shows plenty
of Cabernet backbone on tasting. The Cuvée Tradition is Grenache, with a
little Carignan and Cinsaut, aged in foudres for eighteen months.
There is also a white, a mix of Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc and Rolle, and
finally a rosé, made using Grenache and Cinsaut.
